As we enter the third week of the new year many of us are counting the pennies until payday. There are many of events taking place this week and most of them are under 10 pounds.

Rich Mix – Jan 18th – 23rd – Voice Of Freedom Festival

Voices Of Freedom is a five day festival celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King jr and the inaugaration Barak Obama through film, music and performances. The festival will begin with a screening of Director Spike Lee’s Film Malcom X starring Denzel Washington on 18th January. Next in the lineup is a reading from critcally accliamed novelist Ben Okri from his book Tales of Freedom. On the 19th January Elizabeth Mansfields play Univited will be performed, a touching play telling the stories of refugees from all over the world. The festival ends with music from Deny Baptiste a Mobo award winning saxophonist who will perform a piece inspired by Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a Dream”.

Olympia – 23rd to 24th Jan – The Diet & Fitness Show

A new year often heralds the beginnings of a new diet or fitness regime. Olympia conference and event centre will be hosting this years Diet and Fitness Show where you can go for advice on all things healthy. The show will include cookery demonstrations and seminars and information on the latest diet and exercises to hit the market.

‘The Break Up Album’was recorded two years before Johansson released her 2008 album ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’  and was inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s and Bridget Bardot’s 1960s recordings.

nnekaFollowing the lead of recent Nigerian exports such as Femi Kuti and Psquared is Hip-hop/reggae  artist Nneka Egbuna.

Born to a German Mother and Nigerian father Nneka grew up in Warri State in Nigeria. When she was 19, Nneka immigrated to Hamburg in Germany to pursue a degree in Anthropology. It was here that she met and started working with German Hip Hop producer DJ Farhot, collaborating to release her debut EP ‘The Uncomfortable Truth’ on the Yo Mama Label. This was followed with a tour of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. She released her first album in 2005 entitled ‘Victim of Truth’ the album garnered rave reviews with some critics comparing it to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Album.  Nneka’s lyrics cover a range of issues affecting Nigeria  ranging from corruption, poverty and Captalism.  

Nneka_-_No_Longer_At_Ease_[cover]Her second album “No Longer At Ease” released in April is garnering attention in the mainstream with the song “Heartbeat” coming out as a lead single on the album. Heartbeat has entered the UK Pop charts at number 23. Check it out here.

Nneka is definitely an artist to pay attention to especially if you like others artists like Erykah Badu, Neneh Cherry and Floetry.
